Deep-rooted World Heritage Review

  My name is Catherine, a fresh graduate living in Seoul and I was a lucky teacher for the Deep-rooted World Heritage Program offered by Mizy Center from May to July 2019. This program has for main goal to develop
a mutual understanding about Cultural Diversity and World Heritage by fostering interaction between national
elementary school students and foreigner teachers. Basically, it was a 10-week program with new schedule
every Friday for the class. In short, that means meeting new friends every weekend! Therefore, foreigner
teachers form a team with a Korean peer, which helps keeping a good balance during the class as enhancing a constructive dialogue within the team.

This is how I got to meet my partner, Gu Yun-Jeong (구윤정). At first, we were acting a bit awkward but,
we clicked quite quickly as we got to know each other through the meetings and the trainings. We tried to
present a decent and joyful class for the students. In fact, I wanted to share and introduce a more
contemporary-oriented content about French culture and people and Yun-Jeong agreed with the necessity to show the cultural diversity in France, as it is not well-known.

Beyond the cliché, people usually tend to visit Paris and end up without knowing much about the country.
Paris is not France and even France in Europe is not the only French territory… This is why there are so many different people who are French, who speak different dialects or languages, with an all new kind of tradition and World Heritage from the Western to the Eastern side of the ocean where the New Caledonia Lagoon is located. I really enjoyed the classes because I could always exchange much more that I thought.

Children are so smart and curious. This is the part that I like the most: the children. However, I may admit that I was a bit nervous before beginning this adventure because it was a real challenge for me and we have to be responsible for the class content for 30 young students during almost 2 hours. After the first class, which was chaotic-kiddos everywhere except on the chairs - I and my partner exchanged a look; if we are going
to survive to this, nothing else could stop us from having fun!

And that was the case for 10 weeks. It was about teaching important values such as respecting each other no matter the skin color, religion or the country the people came from, but also, about exchanging and giving each equal chances to learn about living together in a globalized world which I truly believe, is fundamental.

I will always be thankful first, to the metropolitan government that proposes such important programs for
the young and the society, and second to all the Mizy staffs who worked with the bottom of their heart to keep the mood flawless, rich of emotions and prepared meticulously each weekly smallish travels to our new
lovely sites.

뿌리 깊은 세계유산 리뷰

저는 막 대학원을 졸업하고 서울에 거주하고 있는 캐서린입니다. 그리고 좋은 인연이 닿아 지난 해 2019년 5월부터 7월까지 미지센터의 뿌리 깊은 세계유산 프로그램에 참가했습니다. 뿌리 깊은 세계유산은 매주 금요일마다 새로운 학생들과 함께 새로운 수업을 진행하는 10주 간의 문화다양성 교육프로그램으로, 서울에 있는 초등학생들과 외국인 강사와의 직접적인 교류를 통해 문화다양성과 유네스코 세계유산에 대한 이해의 폭을 넓히는데 그 목적을 둡니다. 다시 말해, 저는 매주 새로운 친구들을 만날 수 있었습니다! 또한 외국인 강사들은 한국인 동료강사와 1:1로 팀을 구성하여 수업을 진행하는데, 이러한 강사단 구성은 현장 수업 대화를 강화할 뿐 아니라 수업을 안정적으로 진행하는데 큰 도움을 주었습니다.

저는 이렇게 제 파트너 구윤정을 만났습니다. 처음에는 조금 어색했지만, 자주 만나고 다양한 트레이닝을 통해 서로를 잘 알게 되면서 매우 빠르게 현장수업에 적응할 수 있었습니다. 우리는 참가학생들에게 알맞은 즐거운 수업을 제공하려고 노력했습니다. 사실 저는 프랑스 문화나 사람들에 대해 소개할 때 아직 한국에 많이 알려지지 않은 보다 실제적인 내용들을 공유하고 싶었습니다. 윤정은 제가 말하고자 하는 프랑스의 현재가 프랑스의 문화적 다양성을 보여줄 수 있다는 점에서 그 필요성에 동의했고 이를 바탕으로 함께 수업 내용을 준비했습니다.

프랑스를 방문할 때, 사람들은 보통 파리만을 둘러보고, 프랑스라는 나라에 대해 아무것도 모른 채 돌아가고는 합니다. 하지만 우리가 알고 있는 파리는 모든 프랑스를 보여주지 않으며, 심지어 유럽 내에 위치한 프랑스 또한 프랑스의 유일한 영토가 아닙니다. 이것은 프랑스 국내외에 거주하고 있는 너무 다른 많은 사람들이 모두 프랑스인인 이유입니다, 이 프랑스인들은 매우 다른 다양한 방언들 혹은 언어를 구사하며, 우리가 알고 있는 유럽에서 뉴 칼레도니아 라군이 위치한 바다의 동쪽까지 아우르는 다양한 세계유산과 문화적 전통을 가지고 있습니다. 저는 이러한 내용들을 제가 생각했던 것보다 훨씬 더 원활히 교환했기 때문에 프랑스의 현재를 다루는 현장 수업들이 정말 즐거웠습니다.

아이들은 매우 똑똑하고 호기심이 많습니다. 아이들이 참가자라는 요소는 이 프로그램에서 제가 가장 좋았했던 부분이기도 합니다. 하지만 이 모험을 시작하기 전에 약간은 긴장할 수 밖에 없었습니다. 왜냐하면 우리는 거의 2시간 동안 30명정도되는 학생들을 위한 모든 수업을 책임져야 했기 때문입니다. 첫 번째 현장수업은 무생물인 의자들을 제외하고는 모든 것이 혼돈 그 자체였습니다, 그 혼돈 속에서 제 파트너와 저는 시선을 교환했고 이러한 생각을 했습니다. 우리가 이 혼돈 속에서 살아남는다면, 우리는 그 어떤 상황에서도 수업을 즐길 수 있을 거야! 라고요.

그리고 10주 동안 실제로 그랬습니다. 이 수업을 통해 저는 피부색, 종교 또는 사람들의 출신 국가에 상관없이 서로를 존중하는 자세뿐 아니라, 평등한 기회를 제공하고 동등한 위치에서 의견을 교환하는 세계 속 공존, 제가 생각하기에는 가장 핵심적인 이야기, 에 대해 이야기할 수 있었습니다.

먼저, 학생들과 사회를 위해 이러한 중요한 프로그램을 마련해 준 서울시에 감사합니다, 그리고 진심을 다해 프로그램을 이끌어 주었던 미지의 모든 직원분들에게 감사드립니다. 덕분에 프로그램 내내 늘 풍부한 감정들이 교차했고 프로그램은 매끄럽게 운영되었으며 수업 장소로 향하는 작은 여정들이 모두 빠짐없이 사랑스러웠습니다. 감사합니다.
